Here at Tampa Laundry Company, we are vigilant in keeping our laundry facility open and clean for you and your family to use during this time. We know the importance of keeping laundry and household linens clean and that laundromats are a crucial to you, so we’ve included some of the CDC advice tips for doing laundry during this COVID-19 pandemic.
1. The CDC and WHO state the drycleaning and laundry processes kill most viruses.
2. Wash your hands regularly.
3. When doing laundry at a laundromat, do not touch your face and disinfect all surfaces of the machines you use. with a disinfectant.
4. As is true with other viruses, laundering in hot water, 160 degrees F and with chlorine bleach is the most effective method for sanitizing laundry. If hot water and chlorine bleach are not safe for the items, then laundering with a disinfectant product is an option. The CDC states the laundering with detergent alone is an effective method though.
5. Family and emergency Dr. Janette Nesheiwat said, “Polyester spandex-like material may retain germs longer than cotton-based fabrics, but all types of fabrics can be contaminated.”
6. Dr. Georgine Nanos said not to worry. “Yes, it is safe to use [a shared laundry machine] right now because the virus is killed by washing your clothes over 80 degrees Fahrenheit, from what we currently understand,” she said.
7. Public health specialist Carol Winner says, “Whenever possible, use the hot water setting, as it helps to kill the virus,” she said. “Extra heat, and time in the dryer, do make sense, as the droplets should dry out, which would likely inactivate the virus.”
8. “It’s best, as always, to regularly wash your clothes,” Dr. Georgine Nanos said. Not to wait until you have large piles of dirty laundry. “If you have been in a crowded area, you might want to remove your clothing when you come into the house and put it in the laundry container or washer to be prudent.”
9. After you put your laundry in the machine, you should disinfect the hamper or wash the bag with the laundry to help stop the spread of the virus.
10. Rodney E. Rohde, chair and professor of the Clinical Laboratory Science Program at Texas State Univ. noted, “You should change your clothes and wash them any time others have touched them, or you have been in large group gatherings.”
11. “It’s best to wash a sick person’s clothing separately always,” Nesheiwat said. “Clothing can carry staph, E. coli, flu, etc.”
